Shippers’ Council Urges Government to Maintain Investment in Quality Roading Infrastructure

Sep 26, 2019 | Media Releases

The New Zealand Shippers’ Council welcomes the Government’s decision to green light the Manawatū Gorge replacement road and urges the government not to take its eye off other important roading investments that support the efficient movement of freight across the supply chain.

While supportive of the recent PGF announcement that will see $95 million going to the upgrading of the North Auckland rail line, the Council stresses the importance of maintaining investment in roads.

“Although we’re pleased to see investment in rail that builds capability and contributes to efficiencies across freight corridors – it’s critically important that the Government continues to invest in roads”, says Simon Beale, Chairman of the NZ Shippers Council.

“Freight is the life blood of the economy and roads are still the main mode of transportation for 90% of the freight volumes moving around the country. We look to the Government to ensure that there is continued investment in quality roading infrastructure across the total supply chain.”
