In our view climate change is a global problem – ideally solutions should be sought at a global level if we are to achieve the desired outcome.
Our preferred position with respect to international shipping emissions is for New Zealand to take an active, well-informed role in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s work on this matter.
While we acknowledge the need to reduce emissions across the shipping supply chain, the inclusion of international shipping emissions in New Zealand’s 2050 target poses the very real risk that our importers and exporters, already disadvantaged by distance from market, will unreasonably face multiple surcharges/taxes from multiple sources across their supply chains.
