This submission is made on behalf of the New Zealand Shippers’ Council. The council is the peak body for New Zealand’s freight owners. We represent a very large proportion of New Zealand’s imports and exports. Specifically, our members’ current annual export values exceed NZ$34 billion per annum and their businesses support more than 77,000 employees across the country.
The New Zealand Shippers’ Council supports STIMBR in its request to the EPA for a reassessment of methyl bromide in New Zealand and to provide clarity regarding specific controls scheduled to come into effect in October 2020.
This is an issue of significant importance to NZ shippers. Workable controls, implemented in an environmentally appropriate manner, are required to enable continued export activity. Equally, it is important that industry has adequate time to implement the necessary changes and install technology to comply with the recapture obligation.
We therefore urge support of this application.
Simon Beale, Chair, NZ Shippers’ Council
