NZ Shippers Council Strategy day – Tuesday 19 November
Note: The Strategy Day meeting will be preceded by a Council meeting with the Hon Shane Jones, Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Economic Development and Associate Minister for Transport – 9am at the Beehive.
Full members are invited to attend but must confirm their attendance as soon as possible. The delegation will meet at Saunders Unsworth (70 The Terrace) at 8.45am ahead of the meeting with the Minister.
Topics to be raised with the Minister include:
- Upper North Island Supply Chain study – including associated rail studies: timelines, next steps, scope for Council feedback on UNISC proposal prior to Cabinet paper
- The Government’s rail intentions – extent to which there is a coherent strategy, views on investment in Gisborne in response to projected horticultural growth and associated transportation requirements
- Provincial Growth Fund Investments around regional transport hubs- how these relate to the broader transport strategy
- Concern re infrastructure capacity constraints: congested freight corridors, congestion within ports, inadequate infrastructure for projected growth of cargoes
- Perspective on the fumigation review/reassessment of methyl bromide
Strategy Day 2019
Purpose:
- To discuss and agree / update policy positions on issues of key significance to members (current and forecast)
- To plan priority work programme and strategies for the next 12 months g. government and industry engagement, media engagement, key projects

– discussion and strategies for response to issues arising Service Reliability out of all NZ Ports
- what more we can do to reduce vessel port omissions and ensure all cargo is expedited as planned
Brexit planning
- status update, strategies to mitigate impacts on supply chain Container management, repositioning and availability
- current status of issues, strategies going forward
Port surcharges / infrastructure charges (Continued moves to de-couple traditional freight costs from port and depotcosts)
- review of position paper, actions to date, strategies going forward Shipping service levels: reliability, supply, capacity, port omissions
- Preparation for ICLC meeting MARPOL Low Sulphur Fuel
- planning for LSF 2000: what do we know about the LSF surcharges / fuel transition charges to date, planning for potential impacts on the supply chain, preparation for ICLC meeting.

Change of name event
All members will have received an invitation to attend a function to officially mark the Council’s change of name. The event will directly follow the Strategy Day meeting from 4.30 – 6pm.
We have invited a range of government and industry stakeholders and look forward to a successful event at which there will be a brief presentation about the reason for the name change and the new logo will be unveiled – followed by a great opportunity for networking with officials from entities such as Ministry of Transport, Customs, MPI/Biosecurity, MFAT, MBIE and Maritime NZ. We are also hopeful that at least one of the Ministers with a transport portfolio will put in an appearance.
URGENT – Council nominees sought for Port Industry Health and Safety Plan Steering Groups
Maritime NZ and Worksafe NZ have forwarded a request for engagement and involvement in the Port Industry Health and Safety Plan, which aligns with and supports the Government’s Health and Safety at Work Strategy and is intended to supply a “whole of chain” focus to improve health and safety outcomes in the port environment.
The Council has been invited to nominate two members to be actively involved in the Port Industry Health and Safety Leadership Group and another two members to be involved in the Operational Group.

The designated people will need to be actively eng#_bookmark4aged over the coming months. They will be central to the development of the plan and will champion the work across the sector.
The first Leadership Group meeting will be held in Wellington at 9.30am on 26 November and the second at 9.30am on 19 February. This will be a Chief Executive / president level meeting.
The first Operational Group workshop will be all day starting at 9.30am 3 December in Wellington. A further one or two meetings may be scheduled in the New Year.

Shippers’ Council proud to be part of Biosecurity Business Pledge
The Council is one of 50 New Zealand organisations to have signed the ‘first of its kind’ pledge to protect New Zealand from pests and disease.
As agreed at our OGM earlier this year, the Council has signed the Biosecurity Business Pledge with intent to encourage all members to play their part in the efforts to prevent pests and diseases from getting into New Zealand, or helping to stop the spread if they do get here.
Signatories commit to being an active part of New Zealand’s biosecurity team of all New Zealanders by integrating proactive biosecurity practices into their operations and supply chains.
The aim of the pledge is to take a more proactive approach to biosecurity by improving the partnership between government and businesses to help prevent unnecessary costs and disruptions for businesses, communities and the wider NZ economy.
A key benefit of joining the pledge campaign will be improved early engagement with Biosecurity NZ on emerging biosecurity issues and risks.
